| Vathy is the capital of Ithaca Greece and the largest settlement on the island with over two thousand inhabitants.
The harbour town clings to the edge of an enclosed bay, with a tiny islet at its centre. The lye of the landand the very narrow entrance to the bay means that it is all but hidden from the seaward side. Hidden from pirates, Vathy was one of the few coastal settlements of Ithaca Greece prior to the eighteenth century. Once the bay was discovered by pirates, the people of Vathy moved up the hillside to settle in stafety in Paleochora.
Vathy today is a quintessentially Greek port with cafes, restaurants and fish tavernas spilling out onto the pavements around the harbour and filling the square. The sheletered waters of Vthy bay are a great draw to yachts and there are always a number of them moored here.
Vathy is where most of the island's ammenities can be found on Ithaca; post office, bank with atm, bakeries, groceries, travel agents and gift shops. The main Ithaca ferries to mainland Greece, neighbouring Kefalonia, Corfu and Italy leave from the port at Vathy. Friends of Ithaca offer very good rates for car hire.
