Holiday on Ithaca Greece
Ithaca has no airport, mainly due to its mountainous topography and these factors have spared Ithaca the large scale tourist development that other Ionian islands have fallen prey to. Although the island can get very busy in the summer, Ithaca's tourism is mainly confined to a six week period in July and August and attracts many Greek and Italian tourists as well as British.
With its low key resorts and its pebbly coves dotted around the coastline, Ithaca is an island to visit if you are looking for a quiet holiday in a traditional village.
North Ithaca Greece
Frikes is the most northerly of Ithaca's village resorts. Centred around a tiny harbour, Frikes is a tiny, relaxed village with a handful of inhabitants. A few tourists also stay in nearby Stavros, the most important village in north Ithaca with the largest population.
Most tourists visiting north Ithaca, stay in salubrious Kioni, with its dramatic horseshoe bay and traditional archtecture.
There are a few bits of tourist accommodation dotted around other parts of north Ithaca, such as at Lefki and by the beach at Agios Yiannis, but nothing much to speak of.
South Ithaca Greece
Vathy is Ithaca's capital with some two thoiusand inhabitants and the elongated, hidden bay of Vathy is where most tourists to south Ithaca head. The town itself is a picture of quintessential Greece with tavernas and cafes spilling out onto the town square around lining the harbour's edge. Other accommodation can be found dotted along the coastline of Ithaca close to Vathy.
Perahori is perhaps the most interesting place to stay on Ithaca Greece, situated on the hillside above Vathy commanding some of the most spectacular views on Ithaca. Do not go to Perahorori expecting the usual tourist fare. This is an agrotourism project where you can stay in real houses and become part of the community of this agricultural village in south Ithaca Greece.
